Newly designed Strapping Blocks have been developed to assist flatbed trailer operators who use 4×4 timber dunnage in securing loads. Made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), the Strapping Block is designed to attach to both ends of a 4×4 timber using a single lag screw and washer. The device features a rounded end and integrated “fingers” that help hold a 4-inch strap in place during loading to secure dunnage successfully.

When installed, the Strapping Block keeps the strap from falling out of position as it’s thrown over a load, potentially reducing the need for operators to adjust strap placement from both sides of the trailer. The rounded edge minimizes strap wear and allows for more effective tensioning, which can help prevent load shift during transit.

The block is typically produced in a high-visibility yellow color, making it easier for inspectors to assess strap placement and spacing, even when the straps themselves are faded or worn. Properly used, Strapping Blocks can assist with compliance related to cargo securement regulations by holding straps and dunnage in place as loads are tensioned.

In addition to improving strap stability, the Strapping Block helps integrate timber dunnage into the load. This reduces the risk of the dunnage moving or falling off during transit, which can pose a hazard to other road users.

Additional noted benefits include extended strap lifespan, reduced loss or damage to dunnage, and potentially more efficient loading and unloading procedures. The device may also help drivers avoid cargo securement violations, which can affect safety scores and insurance premiums.

The introduction of this device represents a potential step toward standardizing timber dunnage retention across the industry, with the goal of improving both safety and compliance practices for both new and experienced drivers.
